Welcome to the Energy Solutions for Displacement Settings (ESDS) Project

Energy Solutions for Displacement Settings (ESDS) is one of four project components of the BMZ commissioned Global Programme “Support to UNHCR in the implementation of the Global Compact on Refugees (GCR) in the Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus” (SUN) which assists UNHCR and other stakeholders in operationalizing the GCR in selected displacement contexts. ESDS focuses on the sustainable energy sector and seeks to remedy the lack of sustainable energy supply in order to enhance the self-reliance of communities in Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda.

The articles are structured along the three partner-countries and the three intervention areas, and describe the background and lessons-learnt of the measures undertaken within ESDS.

Should you have thematic questions regarding an article, please contact the person indicated at the bottom page of each article.

GIZ's Energy Solutions for Displacement Settings (ESDS) project cooperates with UNHCR to enhance the access to sustainable energy in displacement contexts, and the Energypedia page has been created to share learnings across various practitioners to spur the development of clean energy solutions.
