International Institute for Environment & Development (IIED)

  • International Institute for Environment & Development (IIED) was founded in 1971 and is based in United Kingdom .
  • Type of organisation: NGO

IIED is an action research and policy organisation promoting sustainable development and linking local priorities to global challenges. IIED’s energy team works with partners to make sure that evidence is grounded in local realities and priorities which then inform national and global debates to deliver on sustainable energy for all. We particularly focus on decentralised energy, cross-sector and inclusive energy planning, productive uses of energy, and financing last-mile energy services.

Key Activities

Our current initiatives include:

• Energy Delivery Models – a collaboration with CAFOD, this is an approach and practical toolkit which focuses on cross-sector and inclusive designing of energy services based on development needs so as to maximise impacts. • A global strategic Partnership on Energy – a renewable energy access advocacy programme with partners across 5 regions • Financing energy access – tracking flows of finance to decentralised energy access; research and dialogue between investors on finance models which reach last mile customers.

• Energy Change Lab (Tanzania): a collaboration with Hivos, this initiative focusses on multi-stakeholder dialogues on key sector issues combined with practical prototyping to catalyse change.
