The EU has submitted specific regulations how to treat energy saving lamps at the end of their life. Thereby, energy saving lamps are treated as waste electronic equipment (WEEE), indicating that disposal as well as recycling requires other considerations as compared to incandescent lamps. 

The prevention of WEEE is a first priority; followed by its reuse, recycling and "other forms of recovery of such wastes so as to reduce the disposal of waste".<ref name="null">Article 1 of Directive 2002/96/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 January 2003 on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE)</ref>
